Gertrude Kasebier b.1852-d.1934

Kasebier was a female photographer practising as a professional in the late 1800's - 1900's. Originally trained in drawing she adopted photography in her late 30's. Rare as it was for a woman to be taken seriously as a photographer she also met further success and recognition after being brought into Alfred Steiglitz's circle of like minded artists named Photo Successionists.

Her work in portraiture promoted the intimacy and beauty of people, especially women. Using soft focus and her unique composition she combinined snapshot imagery with formal portraiture which demonstrated not only her skill at creating beautiful imagery but also her technical ability.
