Student Presentations

In a short, eight to ten minute presentation, you will introduce the group to the images you are working with for your catalogue essay/module assessment project. You are responsible for presenting a concise tour of your selected works with a clear argument, or hypothesis, that the images support. This presentation will be supported with either PowerPoint or a Wiki page in which you will arrange the eight to ten images you have selected for your project. You will attach the presentation below, and you will use this presentation as the means of illustrating your selected images to the group. You should also include two to three images that will help contextualize your materials.

Afternoon Session:

Naked Bodies: Photographic Histories of Gender and Sexuality

In this session we will look at early photographic representations of, in particular, the naked European body, produced for the Academy as anatomical studies and substitutes for life-models. We will discuss the ambiguity of nude photographs caused by the transparent nature of photography in the context of the proliferation of pornographic daguerreotypes in late nineteenth century. We will also consider the differences between photographic representations of male and female bodies in relation to the construction of gender and sexual identities, their photographic histories and impact on cultural attitudes towards the nude, the naked, the pornographic and the obscene.
